In a measured response to recent events, Mr. Mehli Mistry — who was voted out by a majority of trustees last week — has chosen to step away from the public dispute and focus on protecting the Tata Trusts’ long-term standing while invoking the values associated with Ratan Tata.
In a letter addressed to the chairs of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust, Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, and Bhai Hirabai JN Tata Navsari Charitable Institution Trust, Mistry wrote that he seeks to "put the quietus on speculative news reports that do not serve the interests of the Tata Trusts and are inimical to its vision."
Reiterating his allegiance to Ratan Tata’s principles, Mistry warned that allowing the disagreement to escalate could inflict "irreparable harm" on the Trusts’ reputation — an institution long regarded among India’s foremost philanthropic organisations.
The letter projects a posture of restraint and deference to the larger institution. Mistry recalled Ratan Tata’s habit of prioritising public interest over personal considerations and said he had tried to follow that example, urging trustees to continue with transparent governance, ethical stewardship and quiet philanthropy.
The message closes with Ratan Tata’s own reminder: "Nobody is bigger than the institution."
These developments come amid internal differences that emerged after Ratan Tata’s passing last year. Trustees of the Tata Trusts — which together control about two-thirds of Tata Sons, the Tata Group’s holding company — have been divided over representation and control. The dispute reached a head on October 28, when Mistry’s term expired and a majority, led by Mr. Noel Tata, voted against his continuation.
Seen as one of Ratan Tata’s close confidantes and an executor of his will, Mehli Mistry’s composed departure is framed as a final gesture of loyalty, prioritising the stability and reputation of the institution over his personal position.
