Masdar and OMV Collaborate on Major Green Hydrogen Facility in Austria

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

In a significant move towards sustainable energy, Masdar, a leader in clean energy solutions, has teamed up with Austria’s OMV to create a 140 MW green hydrogen electrolyser facility in Bruck an der Leitha, Austria. This project stands as one of the largest in Europe, poised to generate renewable hydrogen to fuel decarbonization efforts in various industrial sectors.

Construction is set to kick off in September 2025, with the plant expected to commence operations by 2027. The joint venture will have OMV as the majority stakeholder, while Masdar maintains a 49 percent share. This collaboration draws on OMV’s industrial expertise alongside Masdar’s financial and technical knowledge in renewable energy across multiple markets.

OMV will provide the renewable electricity necessary for hydrogen production and will own the resulting output, building upon its existing 10 MW green hydrogen unit in Schwechat. This initiative also lays a foundation for future projects focused on sustainable aviation fuels, synthetic chemicals, and expanded green hydrogen efforts throughout Europe and the UAE.

This partnership exemplifies the increasing commitment to energy transition, targeting scalable solutions for industries facing complex emissions challenges and reinforcing the hydrogen economy in Europe. With the joint venture aiming to complete regulatory approvals and necessary documentation by early 2026, it represents a crucial investment in Austria’s clean energy framework and the broader renewable sector in Europe.
