The Hidden Dangers of High Heels: Insights from a Maryland Physician

Post by : Saif Nasser

High heels may be a chic addition for various occasions, but Dr. Kunal Sood, an anaesthesiologist from Maryland, warns that these trendy shoes can significantly impact our body unbeknownst to many. In a recent discussion, he elaborated on how prolonged use of high heels can affect tendons, joints, and elevate the likelihood of developing knee arthritis.

Dr. Sood points out that high heels disrupt the body's natural posture. The ongoing pointed positioning of the foot can lead to the Achilles tendon and calf muscles becoming tighter and less flexible over time. This rigidity reduces ankle mobility, making it uncomfortable to switch to flat shoes. Consequently, the risk of tendon strain and injury increases.

One major concern raised by Dr. Sood is the strain on the knee joints. He explains that wearing heels shifts the body's center of gravity forward, applying additional pressure to the inner knee. This unequal load can accelerate wear on the cartilage over time, heightening the chances of knee osteoarthritis, which is characterized by pain, stiffness, and movement difficulties.

High heels also alter gait. A person may take shorter steps and utilize different muscles, which can become ingrained even after they stop wearing heels. These prolonged adjustments contribute to lasting physical changes in movement.

Dr. Sood concludes that the continuous use of tight, high heels impacts more than just the feet; it modifies tendons, joints, and walking patterns in ways that can persist long after they are removed. Though these shoes may exude elegance, regular wear can bring about significant physical challenges.

Health professionals advise opting for comfortable, supportive footwear for everyday wear while keeping high heels for special occasions. Incorporating calf stretches and frequent foot breaks can also mitigate the strain on the body.
