In December 2025, Malaysia’s formal sector experienced a promising rise in average monthly salaries, reaching an impressive RM3,167. This increase is indicative of a thriving labor market and a recovering economy.
The information was provided in the latest quarterly report by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM). This recent wage hike marks a four percent increase compared to the previous year’s figures.
Such wage growth has been facilitated by an uptick in formal employment, with the formal sector workforce now exceeding seven million, indicating that job opportunities are expanding across a variety of industries.
During the last quarter of 2025, a steady upward trajectory in wages was observed, with monthly earnings gradually rising. This trend reflects improved economic stability and greater demand for skilled professionals.
However, persistent wage disparities between male and female workers are apparent, as males typically dominate the workforce and earn marginally higher average salaries.
There are evident variations in income among diverse demographic groups. Factors like industry type, experience levels, and regional economic conditions contribute to income disparities, showcasing the rich diversity of the labor market.
In terms of age demographics, mid-career workers reported the highest earnings, while younger workers benefited from the most significant wage advancements, indicating improving prospects for newcomers in the labor sphere.
When examining industry specifics, sectors like mining and quarrying emerged with the highest salary levels, while agriculture lagged behind in income growth despite some progress, highlighting the economic disparities across sectors.
Regional disparities in wages are pronounced as well. Major urban areas such as Kuala Lumpur, Pulau Pinang, and Selangor revealed higher wage averages, contrasting starkly with regions experiencing lower income levels, illustrating uneven economic development.
Ultimately, this report signifies a positive trajectory for Malaysia's employment landscape and wage enhancements. Although income inequality poses challenges, the consistent wage growth underscores an economy on a path of stability and improvement.
