Drone Attack on Moscow Leads to Temporary Airport Closures

Drone Attack on Moscow Leads to Temporary Airport Closures

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

On Sunday, three of Moscow’s primary airports faced a temporary closure following a significant drone assault from Ukraine aimed at the Russian capital, resulting in extensive flight interruptions and heightened security concerns.

Russian officials reported that air traffic was suspended at Vnukovo, Domodedovo, and Zhukovsky airports for around one hour in the afternoon, specifically from 1300 GMT to 1400 GMT. This shutdown affected both domestic and international flight schedules, particularly impacting Vnukovo, which is Moscow’s second-busiest airport.

To ensure the safety of passengers amidst active air defense measures surrounding the city, Russia’s aviation authority mandated the closure. Operations gradually returned to normal as the situation stabilized.

Mayor Sergei Sobyanin of Moscow stated that Russian air defenses intercepted and neutralized at least 27 drones directed at the city. Fortunately, no significant damage was reported within Moscow; however, this incident underscores the expanding capabilities of drone warfare encroaching deeper into Russian territory.

Ukraine has not provided an official response to the incidents. Since the conflict erupted in 2022, Kyiv has increased its reliance on drone assaults, facing continuous aerial attacks on its cities from Russian forces simultaneously.

Additionally, a separate report from the governor of the Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, noted a fatal drone strike earlier in the day, where a vehicle carrying a family was struck, resulting in one death and two injuries, including that of a four-year-old child.

These recent events highlight the ongoing impact of the nearly four-year-long conflict on civilian lives and crucial infrastructure on both sides, with air travel and border regions increasingly caught in this turmoil.
