A mild earthquake measuring magnitude 3.5 struck Nepal early Tuesday morning, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) confirmed. The Nepal earthquake occurred at 7:17 AM (IST) with a depth of 10 kilometers, according to data shared by the NCS on X (formerly Twitter).
The post read, “EQ of M: 3.5, On: 28/10/2025, 07:17:25 IST, Lat: 27.79 N, Long: 87.49 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Nepal.” The tremor was classified as shallow, which typically causes stronger surface shaking due to the energy being released close to the ground. Fortunately, there have been no reports of damage or casualties so far.
Experts note that shallow earthquakes—like the Nepal earthquake today—are more likely to be felt strongly, even if they are of lower magnitude, because the seismic energy travels a shorter distance to the Earth’s surface.
Nepal is among the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. It lies on the collision zone between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, which continually push against each other, creating immense geological stress. This pressure is periodically released as earthquakes, making the region vulnerable to frequent tremors.
The Nepal earthquake zone is part of the Himalayan fault system, a region of intense seismic activity. The Indian Plate continues to slide beneath the Eurasian Plate, a geological process known as subduction. This not only causes frequent earthquakes but also contributes to the rise of the Himalayan mountain range.
The country has a history of devastating earthquakes, including the catastrophic 2015 Nepal earthquake that claimed nearly 9,000 lives and caused widespread destruction across Kathmandu and nearby areas.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm but alert as minor earthquakes in Nepal are often part of natural tectonic adjustments. Monitoring continues to ensure early warnings for any potential aftershocks.
