Madhuri Dixit, the acclaimed Bollywood actress, has voiced her stance on the conversation around implementing 8-hour shifts for actors. She asserts that each actor should have the autonomy to dictate their work-life balance. This debate intensified after Deepika Padukone reportedly sought 8-hour shifts, ultimately leading to her departure from the eagerly awaited film 'Spirit', helmed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga and featuring Prabhas.
Drawing from her extensive career, Madhuri shared insights on managing grueling filming hours while nurturing a family. She emphasized that work hours should be a personal choice. Recollecting her experience on 'Mrs Deshpande', she noted that she frequently endured shifts lasting 12 hours or longer. Although a self-proclaimed workaholic who welcomes long hours, she respects those who opt for varied schedules. Madhuri expressed, “If a woman has the capability to say, ‘I want to work these hours,’ then that’s her decision and her life.”
The actress stressed the significance of avoiding pressure for actors to conform to a standard timetable. Her remarks underscore the growing need for flexibility in the entertainment sector. She articulated that work hours should reflect individual preferences and collaborative agreements between performers and producers, inspiring conversations within the industry about the relevance of standardized hours versus personal choices.
Rani Mukerji previously echoed similar sentiments concerning work hour flexibility in Bollywood. She described how scheduling has traditionally been based on mutual agreement among actors and producers. Rani noted, “These matters are now open for discussion, particularly as they gain traction elsewhere. However, this has always been the standard across professions. If producers are agreeable, the film proceeds; if not, it doesn’t. No one is being coerced here.” Madhuri’s viewpoint aligns with Rani’s, advocating for actors’ liberty in managing their professional lives.
