Lung cancer is one of the most serious and life-threatening cancers. Early detection is vital because treatment is much more effective when the disease is caught in time. Dr Tarang Krishna, a cancer surgeon with 22 years of experience and managing director at Cancer Healer Centre, has shared three major warning signs of lung cancer that everyone should know.
Many people believe that only smokers are at risk of lung cancer. Dr Krishna warns that this is a misconception. Non-smokers are also vulnerable. Factors such as air pollution and passive smoking can trigger lung cancer even in people who have never smoked. “Smokers must stay alert, but non-smokers are not risk-free,” he says.
A cough that lasts for weeks and keeps getting worse is a serious warning sign. Dr Krishna advises, “If you have been coughing continuously for two or three weeks, and especially if it is worsening over time, it is very important to see a doctor.” Ignoring a persistent cough can delay diagnosis and treatment. Coughing up even a small amount of blood is another major red flag. This symptom requires immediate medical attention. “If even a little blood is coming with the cough, it is a major warning,” says Dr Krishna. Lung cancer can also cause difficulty breathing or pain in the chest, even during normal activities. Feeling breathless or experiencing chest tightness should not be ignored. Dr Krishna emphasises, “If you are experiencing shortness of breath or pain in the chest during routine activities, consult a doctor immediately.”
Lung cancer often shows symptoms only in the later stages, which makes it deadly. Recognising these warning signs early can lead to timely testing, diagnosis, and treatment, improving survival chances significantly. Anyone experiencing a persistent cough, coughing up blood, or chest pain should not ignore these symptoms. Both smokers and non-smokers must remain vigilant. Consulting a medical professional without delay can make a critical difference in early detection and successful treatment of lung cancer.
