Lucy Liu Takes the Lead in Rosemead, Her First Dramatic Role

Post by : Mina Rahman

Hollywood veteran Lucy Liu, known for her performances in Charlie’s Angels, Kill Bill, and Elementary, steps into the spotlight with her first significant dramatic lead in Rosemead. After nearly three decades in the industry, Liu recognizes the scarcity of substantial dramatic roles she has encountered.

Expressing astonishment at securing this leading role, she commented, “It’s been surprising to not have had many opportunities to explore this side of acting. To be in this field for over 30 years and finally land my first major part feels surreal,” she stated.

Liu also opened up about the biases and stereotypes she has encountered in her journey. Reflecting on criticisms regarding her portrayal in Kill Bill (2003), she questioned why such scrutiny isn’t directed toward other actors in the same way.

She articulated how judgment based on appearance has hindered her career trajectory, mentioning, “I can’t morph into a Caucasian look, but if I could, my opportunities would be vastly different,” she noted.

Despite these challenges, Liu’s commitment to storytelling remains unwavering. “The system has many flaws, yet it should not diminish your belief in the magic of filmmaking,” she reflected, adding that her initial success during her early years in Hollywood fuels her passion.

In Rosemead, she portrays Irene, a Chinese immigrant facing her son’s mental health struggles. Based on a 2017 article, this film marks Liu’s debut as a lead actor and producer. It had its premiere at the Tribeca Festival on June 6 and is set to be released in the U.S. on December 5.
