The global police organisation Interpol has chosen a new leader. French police official Lucas Philippe has been elected as the new president of Interpol. The election took place on Thursday during the organisation’s general assembly held in Marrakech, Morocco. Philippe will serve a four-year term, and his new role places him at the centre of international police cooperation.
Interpol is known for helping police agencies from different countries work together. It assists in tracking criminals, sharing important information, and fighting crimes that cross borders. Because of this, the position of Interpol president is considered highly important in global security. Philippe’s election was welcomed by delegates from around the world, and many expect him to guide the agency through growing security challenges.
This year’s general assembly was one of Interpol’s largest gatherings. It brought together 886 participants from 179 member countries. Representatives from 34 international organisations also took part. They came to discuss some of the most urgent threats facing the world today, such as cyber crime, scam centres, organised crime networks, and the protection of sensitive data.
Cyber crime was one of the main topics of discussion. Many countries are facing an increase in online attacks, including hacking, digital fraud, and data theft. These crimes often involve criminals working from different parts of the world, which makes international cooperation essential. Delegates also talked about scam centres, which have grown rapidly in several regions. These centres trick people into giving away money or personal information, and shutting them down requires joint efforts by multiple countries.
Another serious issue raised during the meeting was organised crime. Groups involved in drug trafficking, human trafficking, and illegal weapons trade continue to operate across borders. Interpol’s role is crucial in helping countries share intelligence, carry out arrests, and track criminal movements. With Philippe now leading the organisation, many hope to see stronger coordination and more effective global responses.
Data protection was also highlighted. As police forces collect more digital information, they must ensure that this data remains safe. Delegates discussed creating better systems to protect personal information while still allowing law enforcement agencies to work efficiently.
Lucas Philippe’s election comes at a time when the world is facing fast-changing security threats. His experience as a French police official is expected to help him guide Interpol through complex situations. Many delegates at the assembly expressed confidence that he will strengthen trust among member countries and help improve cooperation.
Interpol’s general assembly serves as a reminder that crime today is global. No single country can fight it alone. The election of Philippe and the discussions held in Marrakech show that nations are willing to work together to protect their citizens and ensure international safety.
