In a tragic turn of events, 28-year-old US Army veteran Scottie Williams collapsed and passed away shortly after finishing the Silver Strand Veterans Day Half Marathon in San Diego. His unexpected death has sent shockwaves through his family and friends. Williams, who had fought battles with PTSD and successfully rebuilt his life, fell near a water station just moments after crossing the finish line. Despite medics' best efforts with CPR for nearly an hour and a half, he could not be revived.
Originally from California, Williams served as a transport driver in both Korea and Syria. After returning from the latter, he struggled significantly with PTSD and was rated 80% disabled by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Nevertheless, he managed to carve out a fulfilling life, working at a ski resort and connecting deeply with nature.
Just two days prior to his race, Williams had a touching FaceTime conversation with his mother, Katherine Yglesias-Herrera, showing her his new home in San Diego and revealing his intention to marry his girlfriend, Bree Rivera, in a surprise wedding. Rivera was at the finish line, unaware of the heartbreaking events to follow.
In San Diego, Williams found joy by the ocean in a loving relationship, embracing the positive atmosphere of the coastal city. His mother described him as the happiest he had been in a long time.
His unexpected passing has deeply affected the local community. As his body was returned to Ridgecrest, residents, police, and fellow veterans lined the streets, waving American flags in a heartfelt tribute. A GoFundMe campaign has already garnered over $20,000 for funeral costs, with services planned for next weekend.
Williams’ mother wishes for people to remember her son for his incredible resilience, kindness, and his inspirational journey from trauma to a fulfilling life. “He was an extraordinary person, one of the best I’ve ever known,” she stated, urging others to honor his memory.
The family awaits autopsy results to determine the cause of this shocking collapse, as tributes continue to come in from friends, fellow veterans, and the running community, all touched by Williams’ bravery and spirit.
His story serves as a profound reminder of the silent struggles many veterans endure and the courage it takes to rehabilitate a life marked by hardships, resilience, and love.
