Explosion of Lithium Power Bank at Melbourne Airport Results in Severe Burns

Post by : Raina Nasser

Melbourne – A 50-year-old man suffered significant burns at Melbourne International Airport when a lithium power bank in his pocket exploded within the Qantas business class lounge on Thursday at approximately 11 a.m. local time. The blast led to smoke engulfing the lounge, necessitating a rapid evacuation of 150 patrons.

Airport personnel promptly assisted the victim, guiding him to a shower until paramedics arrived to take him to a local hospital for further care. Eyewitnesses recounted a scene of disarray, with one noting that “battery acid was flying everywhere.”

Leanne Tonkes, a film producer present during the event, posted a photo of the charred power bank on the lounge floor and commended the airport staff for their efficient response. She took to social media to express: “Kudos to the individual who intervened and the staff who got him in the shower while evacuating everyone else out of the lounge.”

Qantas, the Australian airline, confirmed that it is reassessing its guidelines regarding lithium battery devices in light of the incident. While power banks are typically allowed in the cabin, airlines globally are increasingly imposing limitations due to safety risks.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority has reported a 92 percent rise in incidents tied to lithium batteries in Australia. In response to related concerns, Emirates has prohibited power banks on its flights, and Virgin Australia now mandates that these devices remain easily accessible after a previous in-flight incident involving fire.

This disturbing event underscores the rising dangers associated with lithium battery devices on airplanes and the pressing need for more rigorous safety protocols. Authorities and airlines are urging travelers to exercise caution with such gadgets and adhere to specific airline safety regulations to mitigate the risk of similar occurrences.
