Renowned Singaporean filmmaker Jack Neo is reviving one of his most cherished characters, announcing a new film titled Liang Po Po: The Comeback. This release will mark the return of the much-loved grandmother to cinemas after a 24-year absence, coinciding with the festive atmosphere of Chinese New Year 2026.
Neo excitedly unveiled the news on his Facebook, sharing the film's teaser poster alongside a heartfelt message: "Hoo hoo hoo, I’ve kept this under wraps for too long! I wanted to surprise everyone. Hoo hoo hoo, dear friends, it's been 24 years, and I can’t wait to see you again!" The poster showcases Liang Po Po humorously eyeing some cash, promising the comedic antics fans have come to enjoy.
Just a day later, the first teaser trailer was released, featuring Liang Po Po humorously questioning if her hair looks tousled, embodying the quirky spirit that made her an endearing household figure. The character originally debuted in the Channel 8 sketch comedy series Comedy Night, which aired from 1990 to 2003 and launched numerous beloved characters, including Mark Lee and the late Moses Lim.
Liang Po Po first graced the big screen in 1999 with Liang Po Po: The Movie, which achieved remarkable success, grossing S$3.03 million and establishing her as one of Singapore's iconic comedic personas. Alongside Liang Po Po, Comedy Night also introduced other Jack Neo characters such as Liang Ximei, who later starred in her own series and film.
The announcement of Liang Po Po: The Comeback has caused a stir across social media platforms, as fans eagerly anticipate the return of the sharp-witted, humorously unforgettable grandmother—a cultural icon in Singapore. Scheduled for a Chinese New Year launch, Neo assures audiences of a nostalgic yet contemporary cinematic experience that honors both the character’s legacy and the festive ambiance of the season.
This much-anticipated return not only revives a classic Singaporean figure but also reaffirms Jack Neo's substantial impact on the local comedy landscape, ensuring that Liang Po Po continues to resonate with audiences across generations.
