Germany faces a significant blow ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as promising midfielder Lennart Karl has been declared unfit to participate after suffering a severe thigh injury during a training session. The 18-year-old Bayern Munich player sustained a tear in his left thigh while practicing with the national team in Chicago this past Friday.
Julian Nagelsmann, the head coach of Germany, announced the unfortunate news shortly before the team was scheduled to play a friendly match against the United States. Following the incident, Karl was rushed to a hospital for evaluation, where medical professionals confirmed the injury would rule him out of the upcoming World Cup. Assan Ouedraogo has been selected as his replacement.
This injury not only affects Karl but also dampens the hopes of the German national team. The young talent had a breakout season with Bayern Munich, contributing to their domestic double win and advancement to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals. His outstanding performances earned him a coveted spot in Germany's World Cup roster, marking him as one of the nation’s most promising young athletes.
Nagelsmann expressed his sadness regarding Karl's situation, emphasizing the player's creativity, speed, and positive impact on the squad. He acknowledged the shock this news brought to the team but reassured that at just 18, Karl has numerous chances ahead in future international competitions.
Welcoming Assan Ouedraogo into the team, Nagelsmann described him as a gifted player with a bright future ahead. He expressed optimism that Ouedraogo would approach this opportunity with confidence on the global stage.
Germany arrived in the United States earlier this week to kick off their World Cup preparations ahead of the tournament's commencement next week. As four-time world champions, they are eager to rebound from disappointing early exits in the previous two World Cups in 2018 and 2022. Their last significant achievement came in 2014 when they clinched the FIFA World Cup title in Brazil.
Assigned to Group E, Germany will commence their World Cup journey against Curacao on June 14, followed by matches against Ivory Coast and Ecuador as they aim for a strong performance in pursuit of their fifth World Cup trophy.
While Karl’s absence is undeniably a setback for Germany, the team is hopeful that emerging talents will rise to the occasion and sustain their World Cup aspirations.
