Mild 3.7 Magnitude Quake Hits Leh, Ladakh

Post by : Raina Nasser

Leh (Ladakh), November 17, 2025 — Residents of Leh were jolted awake early Sunday by a mild earthquake registering 3.7 on the Richter scale, which hit the Union Territory of Ladakh. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) identified the event, reporting that the quake struck at 03:15 am IST at a shallow depth of 10 km, making it perceptible across surrounding areas.

The epicenter, according to the NCS, was pinpointed at latitude 36.64°N and longitude 75.29°E, situated within the geologically active Himalayan zone. The agency conveyed the details via X (formerly Twitter), mentioning:
“EQ of M: 3.7, On: 17/11/2025 03:15:33 IST… Depth: 10 Km, Location: Leh, Ladakh.”

Although considered mild, numerous residents reported perceiving light shaking, particularly in taller buildings. The quake’s occurrence, when most were still asleep, heightened the initial concern. Fortunately, local authorities confirmed that there were no impacts on infrastructure, injuries, or interruptions to essential services.

Residing within the earthquake-prone Himalayan belt, Ladakh frequently experiences low to moderate quakes owing to ongoing tectonic interactions between the Indian and Eurasian plates. Geologists explain that shallow earthquakes, even at moderate levels, can noticeably affect greater distances due to their closeness to the surface.

Despite the quake's mildness, it underscored the region’s susceptibility to seismic risks. Throughout the year, Ladakh has registered multiple minor quakes, triggering renewed talks about disaster readiness, the integrity of buildings, and overall community awareness, especially during the harsh winter months when emergency measures become more challenging.

Both the NCS and local authorities are actively observing the situation for any aftershocks. Residents are advised to stay alert without succumbing to panic, as minor quakes are typical in the area. Anticipated safety guidelines detailing actions to take during and post-earthquakes will be released shortly.

As seismic shifts continue in the Himalayan region, experts stress the importance of revised building regulations, emergency preparedness training, and boosting public consciousness. Even lighter tremors can expose weaknesses in readiness and stress the necessity for community vigilance.

At present, life in Leh has resumed its routine, with the recent tremor serving as a subtle yet significant reminder that the charming mountain locale is situated in one of the world’s most active seismic areas.
