Legal Dispute Surrounds Ranveer Singh's 'Dhurandhar' Ahead of Release

Legal Dispute Surrounds Ranveer Singh's 'Dhurandhar' Ahead of Release

Post by : Mina Rahman

The eagerly awaited spy thriller 'Dhurandhar,' featuring Ranveer Singh and directed by Aditya Dhar, is embroiled in a legal quagmire ahead of its December 5, 2025 release. Parents of the late Major Mohit Sharma, a recipient of the Ashoka Chakra (posthumous) and Sena Medal, allege that the film portrays aspects of their son’s life without authorization.

Following the unveiling of the trailer, which depicted a character involved in clandestine military operations, concerns were raised about its resemblance to Major Sharma's experiences. He served valiantly in the Indian Army’s 1 Para (Special Forces) and was killed in the line of duty during an operation in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir, on March 21, 2009.

In response to the allegations, Major Sharma’s parents pursued legal action in the Delhi High Court, asserting that the film exploits their son's life as a “commercial commodity.” They expressed additional worries about privacy and potential national security breaches, cautioning that the portrayal of Special Forces missions might divulge sensitive operations.

The legal notice has been served to various parties including the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Jio Studios, producer Jyoti Deshpande, and director Aditya Dhar, as they seek a stay on the film's release.

Legal representatives for the filmmakers refuted any allegations linking the narrative to Major Sharma’s story, clarifying that it is a purely fictional creation. Meanwhile, the CBFC has confirmed that the film received clearance as fictional material.

Currently, the Delhi High Court has not prohibited the release but has urged the CBFC to address the family’s concerns thoughtfully, potentially consulting the Indian Army during the final certification process.

'Dhurandhar' boasts a star-studded cast including Ranveer Singh, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, and Sara Arjun. As the film's release date approaches, the industry is keenly awaiting its fate, whether it will stick to the scheduled launch or encounter further postponements.
