KKR Excludes Mustafizur Rahman from IPL 2026 Roster Following BCCI Order

This Saturday, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) announced the release of Bangladesh's fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their squad for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, adhering to an order from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

An official communication from KKR confirmed that the decision was undertaken in light of directions received from the BCCI, the governing body for IPL. The franchise noted that the release was conducted following proper procedures and consultations per league regulations. Additionally, the board has permitted KKR to recruit a replacement player, with further information set to be revealed shortly.

Earlier, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia indicated that the board instructed KKR to release Mustafizur due to "recent developments." He reaffirmed that the franchise could proceed to find a substitute in accordance with IPL standards.

The release surfaces amidst a political uproar related to the selection of the Bangladeshi bowler, which drew attention after allegations of violence against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, stirring significant backlash regarding Mustafizur's IPL 2026 participation.

Mustafizur Rahman was acquired by KKR for ₹9.20 crore during the IPL auction held last December, making his departure a notable shift for the franchise as the new season approaches.

In response to the release, BJP leader Sangeet Singh Som praised the decision, declaring it reflective of public opinion. He also commented on KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan, suggesting that the action demonstrated awareness of the broader sentiments in the country.

As the IPL 2026 season nears, KKR is anticipated to announce a replacement player as they adjust their roster in accordance with the BCCI's mandate.
