Celebrated actor Kiefer Sutherland, with a career spanning over four decades, unveils a new facet of his talent in the charming holiday film Tinsel Town. Sutherland portrays Bradley Mack, a former Hollywood luminary whose fame has waned. Difficult and temperamental, Mack finds himself facing dwindling career prospects after completing the seventh chapter of his action franchise. Reluctantly, he takes a role in a small town's holiday pantomime instead of a prestigious West End production.
This film allows Sutherland to exhibit his singing and dancing skills while navigating a spectrum of emotions as Mack bonds with quirky co-stars and mends fences with his estranged daughter. At the London premiere, Sutherland described his character as "heartwarming," highlighting Mack's transformation from a flawed individual to someone better through the essence of Christmas and family ties. "Performing a song and dance was a first for me, presenting a real challenge and excitement," Sutherland noted. "After 40 years in this industry, I'm truly appreciative of new experiences."
Tinsel Town features Rebel Wilson as Jill, the choreographer for the pantomime. Notably, Theodora Williams, daughter of pop icon Robbie Williams and actress Ayda Field, makes her acting debut as Jill’s daughter, Cara. Williams shared her adaptation process to a Yorkshire accent for the role, emphasizing the importance of staying present over perfect pronunciation to achieve a natural performance.
Directed by Chris Foggin, this film is crafted to enchant audiences of all ages, honoring the vibrant warmth of British pantomime. The cast also includes Katherine Ryan as Mack's agent and Derek Jacobi as Albert, a loyal veteran of the theatre. Actress Maria Friedman, portraying a member of the pantomime, emphasized the movie's celebration of "Britishness" and kindness, stating, "It has a big, warm heart. How much we need that right now."
Tinsel Town is set for release in selected US theatres and digital platforms this Friday, with its UK premiere on Sky Cinema scheduled for December 5. The film not only captures the enchanting spirit of Christmas and the allure of British theatre but also showcases Sutherland’s readiness for fresh challenges, providing fans with a genuine and touching cinematic journey.
