Khashoggi's Widow Voices Anger After Trump Meets Crown Prince

Post by : Raina Nasser

Hanan Elatr Khashoggi has publicly condemned President Donald Trump after his warm reception of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the White House. This marks the crown prince's first official visit to Washington since the 2018 assassination of Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

The widow expressed feelings of "disappointment" and "upset" while witnessing the meeting. She stated her disbelief at Trump's defense of the crown prince, despite U.S. intelligence findings suggesting that the Saudi leader ordered the killing.

Who Was Jamal Khashoggi?

Jamal Khashoggi was a prominent Saudi journalist residing in the U.S., known for critical opinions on the Saudi government. He wrote for major American publications.

On October 2, 2018, Khashoggi entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to finalize marriage paperwork. International probes reveal he was killed and dismembered inside the consulate, with his body never recovered.

The nature of his murder incited global outrage and strained diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Western nations.

Why His Widow Is Upset

Hanan criticized Trump’s portrayal of Jamal as "controversial," asserting he was a courageous journalist seeking a positive future for Saudi Arabia. She lamented that Trump chose to defend the crown prince rather than address the concerns surrounding Khashoggi's death, which deeply pains her as she continues to seek justice.

U.S. Intelligence Findings vs. Trump's Stand

A U.S. intelligence report released after the murder indicated that the crown prince had ordered Khashoggi's execution. During their recent meeting, however, Trump suggested that Mohammed bin Salman "did not know" what transpired and downplayed the seriousness of the incident.

This statement conflicted with the findings of U.S. agencies and rekindled criticism from human rights advocates and press freedom supporters.

Hanan Shocked by Trump Scolding Reporter

When an American journalist questioned the crown prince about his involvement in Khashoggi's murder, Trump interrupted, accusing the journalist of attempting to "embarrass" his guest.

Hanan expressed her astonishment at seeing a President chastise a journalist for inquiring about such a significant murder case, emphasizing that her husband championed freedom of expression and the right to raise challenging questions. This incident highlighted, for her, a disregard for democratic principles.

Widow Still Seeking Justice, Closure, and Dignity

Hanan disclosed that she has reached out to Trump in hopes of receiving support in her quest for justice, asking for:

  • The return of her husband's remains for a dignified burial,

  • A formal apology,

  • Financial compensation typical in wrongful death cases.

Despite her efforts, she has not received any acknowledgment from the White House, leaving her feeling overlooked.

Additionally, Hanan has sought a direct conversation with the crown prince to discuss obtaining her husband's remains and bringing closure to her suffering.

Her Legal and Personal Situation

Following Khashoggi's murder, Hanan received asylum in the U.S. for her safety. She admitted facing emotional challenges but remains unwavering in her pursuit of accountability.

Saudi officials have questioned her marital status, claiming the marriage was not officially registered, which Hanan disputes, asserting that they lived as husband and wife, and she has every right to demand answers and justice.

Why This Meeting Matters Politically

The meeting between Trump and Mohammed bin Salman is seen as significant, indicating a possible reset in U.S.–Saudi relations post-murder. It suggests that Trump is willing to overlook controversies to restore ties, especially as the crown prince proposes significant investments in the U.S.

Critics raise broader concerns:

  • Should the U.S. foster warm relations with a leader implicated in a journalist's killing?

  • Does defending the crown prince imply that human rights and press freedom take a backseat?

  • Could this tarnish America's reputation as a proponent of democratic values globally?

These issues resonate deeply in Hanan's comments.

The Human Side of the Story

For Hanan, the situation transcends political or media debates; it is intensely personal. The violent loss of her husband continues to haunt her, particularly when world leaders seemingly trivialize or neglect her pleas.

She expressed that her aspirations are not vengeful but centered on finding closure:

  • She seeks to honor her husband with a proper burial according to cultural customs.

  • She desires public acknowledgment of the wrong done.

  • She hopes no other journalist or dissident endures a similar fate in the future.

A Widow’s Message to the World

Hanan fears that global powers may prioritize political convenience over justice. She reiterated that her husband epitomized truth, freedom, and transparency, urging the world not to forget his demise.

Hanan vowed to fight for justice for as long as it takes, affirming that Jamal Khashoggi deserves dignity in death, just as he embodied dignity in life.
