Inside the World’s Highest Ultra-Marathon: The Khardung La Challenge and Its Extreme Fight for Survival

Post by : Saif Nasser

India is home to many unique landscapes, from peaceful beaches to snowy mountains. But among all its natural wonders, one place stands out for its extraordinary challenge — the Khardung La Challenge, known as one of the world’s highest and toughest ultra-marathons. This race pushes the limits of the human body and mind, taking runners to heights where the air is thin and the temperature can drop quickly.

A Race Like No Other

The Khardung La Challenge is held every year in Ladakh, one of India’s most beautiful yet harsh regions. The race covers 72 kilometers and reaches an unbelievable height of 17,618 feet above sea level. At this point, the oxygen in the air is nearly 50% less than what we breathe at sea level. This makes each breath a struggle and every step a test of strength.

What started with only 11 runners in 2012 has now grown into a major global event. In 2023, the race saw almost 250 participants, including some of the world’s most elite and experienced athletes.

A Journey Through Extreme Terrain

A recent National Geographic video renewed global interest in this extraordinary race. The clip, from their series India From Above, shows breathtaking aerial views of the Ladakh mountains and the runners making their way through steep climbs, rocky paths, and freezing winds.

The most difficult part of the marathon is the climb to the top of Khardung La Pass. This is not just a hill — it is one of the highest motorable passes in the world. The path rises constantly, leaving runners breathless and exhausted. The body is under tremendous stress, and many runners experience dizziness, nausea, and extreme fatigue due to the low oxygen levels.

Out of the 72 km, nearly 60 km are run at altitudes above 14,000 feet, where survival itself becomes a challenge.

Winners of 2025

The Khardung La Challenge has created legends over the years. One of them is Shabbir Hussain, who made history by becoming the first person to win the race three years in a row, back in 2019. In 2025, he once again proved his unmatched endurance by winning the men’s category.

In the women’s category, Namgyal Lhamo took the top spot in 2025, earning praise for her strength and determination in one of the harshest races on Earth.

Only for the Strongest Runners

The organisers clearly state that the Khardung La Challenge is “only for the fittest and very experienced runners.” The risk of altitude sickness, dehydration, and sudden weather changes makes the race extremely dangerous for beginners.

Runners have to train for months, focusing not only on long-distance running but also on adapting to low-oxygen environments. Many athletes spend weeks in Ladakh before the race to prepare their bodies for the thin air.

About Khardung La Pass

Khardung La is a mountain pass in the Ladakh region. It connects Leh to the Nubra and Shyok valleys and is known for its strategic military importance. For travelers, it is a dream destination. Many bikers visit the pass every year to experience the thrill of riding through some of the world’s highest roads.

Though it is often covered in snow and surrounded by rugged mountains, the pass offers stunning views that look like scenes from another world.

More Than a Race — A Life Experience

The Khardung La Challenge is not just a competition. For many runners, it is a personal journey. It teaches them discipline, patience, and courage. The local culture, the harsh natural beauty, and the warm hospitality of Ladakhi people make the experience unforgettable.
