Khalifa University of Science and Technology has formalized a partnership through a memorandum of understanding with Guangzhou Baiyun Electric Equipment Co., Ltd. (BYE) from China. This collaboration is aimed at advancing technologies in clean energy and modern electrification. The agreement looks to establish a joint innovation lab to aid in long-term R&D, benefiting the power sector across the GCC region.
The MoU was signed by Professor Ebrahim Al Hajri, President of Khalifa University, and Dezhao Hu, Chairman of BYE. This new partnership will prioritize crucial areas such as renewable energy integration, energy storage solutions, advanced power electronics, hybrid AC/DC transmission systems, transportation electrification, green hydrogen technologies, and AI-powered power systems. Both institutions also aim to enhance data centre integration to address the UAE’s growing energy demands.
In addition to research, the collaboration will facilitate student internships, professional training, and joint seminars, fostering connections between industry professionals and academic researchers. Khalifa University’s Advanced Power and Energy Centre (APEC) is designated as the primary R&D center for BYE within the UAE, allowing collaboration on joint research projects and providing BYE access to APEC’s facilities.
Professor Al Hajri emphasized that this partnership underscores the university’s dedication to advancing the UAE's sustainable energy goals. By merging BYE’s expertise with APEC’s research capabilities, the institutions aim to catalyze the development of innovative technologies tailored for the GCC and beyond. Dezhao Hu remarked on the significance of the partnership, highlighting its role in BYE's growth and innovative drive in the region.
Under this agreement, Khalifa University students will benefit from summer internships and paid positions within BYE’s research and development hubs. The initiative is designed to promote knowledge transfer and prepare future experts for the evolving energy landscape of the region. Furthermore, the MoU includes plans for an annual training programme aimed at producing at least five specialized professionals and offering technical seminars for industry stakeholders.
This collaborative effort is predicted to advance research in renewable energy, modern grid systems, and next-generation electrification technologies, aligning with the UAE’s sustainability objectives.
