Kartik Kumra, aged 25, is rapidly becoming one of the fashion industry's notable young designers. His story stands out because he is self-taught; he never attended a fashion school. His creations are now worn by prominent celebrities and featured on prestigious runways, including Paris Fashion Week.
Interestingly, fashion wasn’t his original aspiration. “I used to dream of being a football player,” he shares gleefully. Even today, football holds a special place in his heart. Yet, his fashion journey has opened doors he never imagined.
Kumra's designs combine contemporary aesthetics with India’s rich textile heritage. Known for intricate details derived from traditional Indian craftsmanship, his work incorporates techniques like chikan embroidery from Lucknow, block printing, and luxurious wool-silk blends. His pieces strike a balance between modern simplicity and cultural richness, appealing to various tastes.
His garments have gained international acclaim, spotted on celebrities such as rapper Kendrick Lamar and actor Paul Mescal at high-profile events. This significant recognition has catapulted his brand, Kartik Research, onto the global stage.
Kartik's foray into fashion took off during the COVID-19 lockdown when he was a college student exploring his creative talents from home. What began as a modest endeavor evolved into a thriving brand.
In just five years, Kartik Research has achieved remarkable growth, now available in 70 global retail outlets. Among these are renowned establishments like Selfridges in London and 10 Corso Como in Milan. His New York location opened five months ago, with plans for further expansion.
Adding to his accolades, Kartik was featured in Time magazine’s “Time 100 Next,” showcasing influential young individuals who are shaping the future. This recognition is particularly significant for a designer as young as he is.
When discussing his creative approach, Kartik emphasizes the importance of balance. He incorporates subtle yet impactful details in each design, such as tiny embroidered accents on a black linen shirt or a nuanced print that is nearly invisible at first glance. This strategy enhances the wearability of his pieces while imparting a unique quality.
Raised in Delhi, Kartik hails from a supportive family; his mother is a career counsellor and his father a businessman. They encouraged his exploration of fashion, even when it wasn’t his initial ambition. Though once defined by his passion for football, he has now embraced a new trajectory in life.
Today, Kartik Kumra represents inspiration for countless young aspirants. His narrative exemplifies how talent can emerge from anywhere, even from a college dormitory during a pandemic, driven by creativity, hard work, and a commitment to heritage on a global platform.
