New Zealand has officially named its squad for the upcoming Test clash against the West Indies in Christchurch, highlighting the significant return of Kane Williamson. The seasoned batter, who had taken a step back from certain formats, rejoins the Test lineup after his absence during the Zimbabwe tour earlier this year. His return injects vital experience and confidence into the squad as they embark on a new cycle of the World Test Championship. Head coach Rob Walter emphasized that Williamson’s leadership will be essential for the team during this home series.
Blair Tickner also earns a recall to the Test squad for the first time since early 2023, having last played against Sri Lanka. His strong performances in white-ball cricket have reignited interest in him, with Coach Walter noting that both Tickner and Jacob Duffy are well aware of international cricket's demands and have delivered impressive results in recent outings. Their inclusion enhances New Zealand’s pace attack for the series ahead.
However, Kyle Jamieson is absent from the squad as he carefully continues his rehabilitation from a long-standing back injury. The selection panel is committed to a cautious approach, prioritizing his gradual recovery to avoid recurrence. Jamieson is anticipated to return once fully ready, underscoring New Zealand’s focus on the long-term fitness of its key players.
The lineup also features Jacob Duffy and Zak Foulkes, who made a splash by taking nine wickets on his Test debut against Zimbabwe. Currently on the rise, Foulkes’ impressive form in both formats earned him a place in the squad. Selectors are optimistic about his potential to perform well against a formidable West Indies lineup.
Glenn Phillips has not made the squad as he continues to regain full fitness from a groin injury, with the team opting to allow him adequate match time before returning to the international stage. Similarly, Matt Fisher, Will O’Rourke, and Ben Sears are sidelined due to injuries, creating room for other bowlers to seize the opportunity.
All-rounder Daryl Mitchell returns to the fold after recovering from an injury, providing the batting depth and bowling versatility that New Zealand will require. His experience, particularly in home conditions, is expected to greatly benefit the middle order.
Williams will take the field for Northern Districts in the second round of the Plunket Shield prior to his return to the national team. This match offers him a chance to reacquaint himself with red-ball cricket ahead of the first Test, especially after stepping back from T20 internationals and appearing in just two ODIs due to a groin issue.
This Test series against the West Indies represents the kickoff of New Zealand’s 2025–27 World Test Championship campaign. With experienced players like Williamson and promising talents like Foulkes, the team is eager to launch this new cycle with a robust performance at home.
