Kaantha's Box Office Stalls on Day 3 After Saturday Surge

Selvamani Selvaraj’s period drama Kaantha, starring Dulquer Salmaan, Bhagyashri Borse, Samuthirakani, and Rana Daggubati, debuted on Friday amid high expectations due to its nostalgic setting and commendable cast. Taking place in the 1950s in Madras, the film aims to portray an era of artistic upheaval in Tamil cinema, combining drama, emotion, and an insider’s perspective of early filmmaking. However, the film’s initial buzz did not translate to sustained box office performance, as evidenced by fluctuating weekend earnings.

Preliminary estimates reveal that Kaantha garnered ₹3.87 crore on Day 3 (Sunday), summing up to a domestic total of ₹13.22 crore. It opened with ₹4.35 crore domestically and ₹10.50 crore worldwide, buoyed by Dulquer’s fan following and the unique premise. The numbers peaked on Saturday, reaching ₹5 crore in India and ₹16 crore globally, indicating initial growth. Yet, Sunday saw a dip, indicating inconsistent audience reactions.

Occupancy rates illustrate the film’s regional challenges, with Tamil regions achieving 26.49% attendance, whereas Telugu-speaking areas only attracted 17.16%. This disparity indicates mixed viewer engagement and varying regional appeal.

Audiences who connected with Kaantha praised several aspects, particularly Dulquer Salmaan, whose portrayal of TK Mahadevan was noted for its authenticity, echoing the acting style of Tamil cinema legends from the 1950s. His emotive performance, traditional garb, and nuanced body language added depth to the character. Samuthirakani’s role as Ayya, a revered filmmaker and Mahadevan’s mentor, also garnered acclaim for its emotional weight, while Bhagyashri Borse’s performance as Kumari brought charm and sincerity. Rana Daggubati as Inspector Phoenix added a layer of authority to key dramatic scenes.

Conversely, some viewers criticized the film for its pacing, especially in the early stages, which detracted from engagement. The narrative's blend of period drama, personal conflict, and the creation of a fictional horror film introduced complexity that did not resonate universally, limiting its mainstream appeal. Such factors have led to divided reviews, which directly affected the Day 3 box office results.

Kaantha’s narrative unfolds during a transformative time for Tamil cinema. Dulquer’s character, Mahadevan, embarks on creating Saantha, deemed Tamil cinema’s first foray into horror. The evolving dynamic with Ayya, who shifts from mentor to collaborator, forms the emotional backbone of the film. Their contrasting perspectives and personal frictions affect those around them, including Kumari and Inspector Phoenix. The film leverages this dramatic interplay to explore the culture of early filmmaking, the pressures of stardom, and the emotional toll of creativity.

Produced by Wayfarer Films and Spirit Media, Kaantha invests heavily in recreating the aesthetics of 1950s Madras, from costumes to cinematography. The technical team's meticulous efforts have been widely acknowledged as a standout feature of the film. Initially slated for an earlier release, Kaantha’s launch was postponed to avoid clashes with other major films, allowing it a clearer path to theaters.

As the weekend comes to a close, all eyes are on Kaantha’s performance in the forthcoming weekdays. Maintaining interest will require steady audience engagement, particularly in light of the competitive film landscape. While the film has found appreciation among niche audiences for its artistic choices and retro appeal, its box office success will hinge on whether the word-of-mouth dynamics shift positively or negatively in the days ahead. Kaantha, therefore, remains a bold cinematic endeavor, combining nostalgia with strong performances and a peek into the origins of Tamil filmmaking, even as it faces box office uncertainties.
