US Vice President JD Vance turned heads on Friday (October 31) after sharing a playful Halloween post that recreated the viral “Fat JD” meme, showing he can laugh at himself even amid public criticism.
Vance, who has recently faced scrutiny for his remarks about his wife’s faith, surprised followers by leaning into internet humor. He posted a photo wearing a curly brown wig that matched the look from the viral meme, instantly sparking laughter across social media platforms.
The photo quickly went viral, earning millions of views within hours. In a short Instagram video filmed at the Naval Observatory residence, Vance is seen greeting trick-or-treaters at his door dressed in a dark suit and red tie.
“Happy Halloween everyone, remember to say thank you while you trick or treat!” Vance says, referencing the famous “you didn’t say thank you” meme line.
The playful clip ends with Vance spinning under purple lights to the haunting “Twilight Zone” theme — a clever nod to the eerie fun of Halloween night.
The White House even joined in on the joke by reposting the selfie with the caption: “Make sure you say thank you.”
Social media users quickly flooded the post with positive reactions, praising Vance for showing a lighter side.
“Having a VP that isn’t soft is awesome,” one user wrote. Another added, “Okay, I’ll give you this — this was indeed funny.”
Others applauded him for embracing humor during tense political times. “He actually did it. We live in the greatest time in history,” read one viral comment.
The “Fat JD” meme originally began circulating earlier this year after a heated exchange between Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Internet users photoshopped images of Vance with an exaggeratedly round face and wild curls, captioning them with lines like “You didn’t say please” or “You didn’t say thank you.”
Earlier that same day, Vance addressed criticism over his comments about his wife Usha Vance’s religion. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), he called the backlash “disgusting,” while acknowledging that discussions about his interfaith marriage were inevitable as a public figure.
Despite the controversy, his Halloween post seemed to shift public attention — showcasing a moment of humor and self-awareness.
By turning a viral joke into a personal statement, JD Vance managed to humanize his image, showing that even in politics, a sense of humor can go a long way.
