Janhvi Kapoor Addresses the Lynching of Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh

Post by : Mina Rahman

Actress Janhvi Kapoor has taken a firm stand against the horrific lynching of 27-year-old Hindu worker Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh, Bangladesh. This tragic event, marked by a violent mob assault leading to his death by beating and burning, has drawn significant outrage and condemnation. Deeply affected after viewing the disturbing footage, Kapoor termed the incident a “slaughter” and criticized the growing extremism that enables such brutality.

On her Instagram Stories on Thursday, Janhvi shared an emotional message titled “Dipu Chandra Das,” calling for awareness regarding this incident. She encouraged her followers to watch the circulating videos and advocate against such horrific acts of violence. Her message read, “What is happening in Bangladesh is barbaric. It is slaughter and not an isolated event. If you are unaware of this inhumane public lynching, please read about it, see the footage, and question it. If you feel no outrage despite this, it exemplifies the kind of hypocrisy that could lead to our downfall.”

Janhvi expressed her dismay over society's selective outrage, stating, “We often react to incidents happening far away while ignoring the suffering of our own. Extremism of any kind must always be condemned; we cannot afford to forget our humanity.” She urged people to speak up against such atrocities.

Dipu Chandra Das worked at a garment factory in Mymensingh and was accused of blasphemy, which triggered the violent mob attack on Thursday night. Reports indicate that after being brutally attacked, he was set ablaze, with his charred remains found tied to a tree in a shocking act of lynching.

The victim’s family discovered the incident through social media, and they are devastated. Authorities have apprehended at least 12 suspects connected to the murder, and further investigations are underway.

The incident has incited outrage across social media platforms, with many commending Janhvi Kapoor for her bold stance against violence. Various comments noted her courage to denounce Islamic extremism and the murder, particularly when many in Bollywood have opted for silence, likely due to fears of backlash.

One user remarked, “Janhvi is bravely addressing the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das while others in Bollywood remain quiet, worried about losing their market share. Kudos to her for condemning extremism at home.”

Other users hailed her awareness and readiness to tackle societal issues. A commenter stated, “Though I might not favor Janhvi as an actress, she is informed and unafraid to speak up regarding vital issues.”

Many hope Janhvi's example will galvanize more public figures to confront extremism and violence wherever it arises.

This tragic lynching has once again spotlighted the persistent problems of religious intolerance and mob violence in South Asia. Such occurrences raise urgent questions regarding the safety of minority groups and the necessity for strong law enforcement. Human rights advocates are calling for decisive measures to prevent such tragedies and to ensure justice for victims.

With the investigation still ongoing, the nation is closely monitoring developments, anticipating justice for Dipu Chandra Das and a renewed commitment against extremism.
