Israeli Airstrikes Result in Casualties in Lebanon, Damage to Catholic Convent

Recent Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon have resulted in at least seven fatalities and numerous injuries, exacerbating existing tensions with Hezbollah despite a ceasefire. This aggressive military action coincided with the reported demolition of a Catholic convent situated in the village of Yaroun, which has attracted international scrutiny.

Reports from Lebanese officials and local media highlight that several villages, including Kfar Dajal, Lwaizeh, and Shoukin, were the targets of the assaults. Casualties include two in Kfar Dajal, three in Lwaizeh, and two in Shoukin as Israeli airstrikes hit residential areas and vehicles.

Despite a ceasefire that has officially been in place since April 17 between Israel and Hezbollah, both sides have engaged in violent exchanges recently, maintaining a climate of instability along the border and leading many local civilians to evacuate their homes.

One particularly contentious event during this latest surge of violence occurred in the Christian village of Yaroun. Israeli forces reportedly utilized bulldozers to raze parts of the convent belonging to the Basilian Salvatorian Sisters. Church representatives noted that this site also housed a school and a medical clinic that were rendered non-operational due to the ongoing conflict.

Gladys Sabbagh, superior general of the Basilian Salvatorian Sisters, confirmed the destruction of the convent. She noted that the site was abandoned by two resident nuns due to safety threats. Additionally, the ongoing conflicts have displaced many of Yaroun's residents.

The Israeli military has justified its actions by asserting that the damaged convent was allegedly utilized by Hezbollah fighters for rocket launches. Israeli officials added that initial assessments categorized the building as a standard structure, asserting it bore no evident religious markings. They also claimed military operations ceased upon discovering its church affiliation.

Critics from the Lebanese Catholic Church have vehemently rejected these explanations. Rev. Abdo Abou Kassm, of the Catholic Center for Information in Lebanon, denied any military involvement of the convent, underscoring that places of worship should be sanctuaries, not military installations.

This incident has heighted apprehensions among Christian congregations in Lebanon, especially following various reports of damage to religious sites amidst the fighting. Recently, videos emerged of an Israeli soldier vandalizing a statue of Jesus in Debel, prompting outrage both locally and globally.

Human rights organizations and faith groups have expressed alarm over the consequences of this conflict on civilians and sacred spaces. Recent assessments reveal extensive damage to numerous churches, monasteries, and other Christian landmarks in southern Lebanon since hostilities escalated.

In response, Israel has stated that its military operations are aimed at dismantling Hezbollah infrastructure and guarding against attacks on northern Israeli settlements. Reports indicate around 50 airstrikes targeting Hezbollah locations and assets occurred within just 24 hours.

The ongoing clashes have exacerbated the humanitarian situation in southern Lebanon, with thousands of families displaced as airstrikes and shelling continue to pose significant threats. Many essential facilities, structures, and roads have suffered severe damage.

International observers remain concerned that persistent violence threatens the fragile ceasefire and raises the prospect of broader regional conflict involving Hezbollah and Israel, alongside other Middle Eastern factions. Although diplomatic initiatives are underway to quell tensions, ongoing strikes and retaliatory measures exacerbate an already tenuous situation.
