Israel Claims 13 Hamas Members Gunned Down in Lebanese Camp Strike

Post by : Raina Nasser

Israel has declared that a military operation conducted on a Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon resulted in the deaths of 13 individuals identified as Hamas militants. This strike occurred on Tuesday at the Ain al-Helweh camp, recognized as the largest Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon.

Authorities in Lebanon have corroborated that at least 13 people lost their lives due to the attack, although no additional details or names of the deceased have been disclosed.

According to the Israeli defense forces, the operation was directed at a Hamas training facility within the camp premises. The military alleges that among the deceased was Jihad Saidawi, whom they accused of training fighters to launch assaults on Israeli territories from within Lebanon. Israel reiterated that this operation is part of its ongoing strategy to curb Hamas's influence in Lebanon.

Conversely, Hamas dismissed these assertions, claiming the targeted site was not a military installation but a public sports field favored by the youth of the camp. Hamas referred to the strike as a “massacre,” stressing that many of the deceased were young boys.

A school operating within the camp confirmed that two of its students were among those killed. Images circulating online showcased the faces of the 13 victims as reported by Hamas.

The Ain al-Helweh camp, positioned near Sidon, has a long-standing reputation for being a densely populated area rife with tensions among various factions. This airstrike occurs despite a ceasefire agreement established last November, which aimed to halt ongoing confrontations between Israel and groups affiliated with Hamas and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Israel has stated its intent to persist in targeting what it views as Hamas operations in Lebanon, accusing militant factions of strategically utilizing densely populated civilian locales for cover. Meanwhile, residents of the camp are demanding clarity and calling for an inquiry into the rationale behind the strike amidst a populous area.
