Isiah Whitlock Jr., the esteemed actor famous for his memorable performances in The Wire and Veep, has died at the age of 71. His manager confirmed that he passed away in New York after a brief illness.

Whitlock’s portrayal of Senator Clay Davis, a corrupt character in The Wire, is considered one of television's greatest roles. Appearing in 25 episodes over the show's five-season run, Whitlock endeared himself to viewers with his character's straightforwardness and his iconic catchphrase, “sheee-it,” which became beloved by fans.

The news has deeply affected many in the film industry, particularly Spike Lee. Lee expressed his sorrow, calling Whitlock's death “a big, big, big loss” and adding, “I’m going to miss him for the rest of my life.”

Beyond The Wire, Whitlock’s work with Spike Lee spanned several films, including She Hate Me (2004), Red Hook Summer (2012), Chi-Raq (2015), BlacKkKlansman (2018), and Da 5 Bloods (2020). His distinctive talent made him a treasured member of Lee’s ensemble.

Originally from South Bend, Indiana, Whitlock aspired to be a football player until injuries shifted his focus to theater. He honed his craft studying theater at Southwest Minnesota State University before moving to San Francisco for stage performances. His television career took off in the late 1980s with minor roles, appearing in shows like Cagney & Lacey and in films like Goodfellas and Gremlins 2: The New Batch.

After The Wire, Whitlock continued his influence in television by joining the cast of Veep, where he portrayed Secretary of Defense George Maddox for three seasons, a character who often clashed with Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Selina Meyer during the primaries. This role showcased his ability to deliver compelling performances that resonated with audiences.

Isiah Whitlock Jr. leaves behind a profound legacy in film and television. His standout characters, iconic phrases, and impactful presence will be celebrated, marking the conclusion of a remarkably inspiring journey in entertainment.
