Isabgol Is More Than a Constipation Remedy: Nutritionist Explains Its Hidden Health Benefits

Post by : Saif Nasser

For many households, isabgol, also known as psyllium husk, is a familiar name. It is often kept in the kitchen or medicine cabinet and used mainly as a quick solution for constipation. However, health experts now say that this simple fibre offers far more benefits than most people realise.

According to nutritionist and gut health mentor Kanchan Nayyar, isabgol is a powerful form of soluble fibre that can support digestion, weight management, and even blood sugar control. In a recent social media video, she explained how the benefits of isabgol change depending on how and when it is consumed.

The most well-known benefit of isabgol is relief from constipation. When taken with warm water or milk, it absorbs water in the gut and softens stools. This makes bowel movements smoother and more regular. Nutritionists usually suggest taking one tablespoon at night for best results.

Isabgol can also help reduce acidity. When mixed with cold milk, it forms a soothing layer in the stomach. This can calm irritation, reduce burning sensations, and provide relief from acid reflux. Many people find this especially helpful after heavy or spicy meals.

Another lesser-known benefit of isabgol is its role in weight management. When taken with lukewarm water before meals, it helps people feel full for a longer time. This feeling of fullness can reduce overeating and unnecessary snacking, making it easier to control calorie intake naturally.

Isabgol can also be useful during diarrhoea. When mixed with curd, it helps balance gut bacteria and absorbs excess water in the intestines. This can slow down loose motions and support better digestive recovery.

For people concerned about blood sugar levels, isabgol may offer added support. Taken with water after meals, it slows down the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream. This can help prevent sudden sugar spikes, which is especially helpful for people managing diabetes or insulin resistance.

Health experts remind readers that while isabgol is natural, it should still be used carefully. Drinking enough water is important when consuming fibre, and people with medical conditions should consult a doctor before making it a daily habit.

In a world full of expensive supplements and complex diet trends, isabgol stands out as a simple, affordable, and versatile option. Used correctly, this humble fibre can support overall health in more ways than just easing constipation.
