Iran Seeks Russia’s Support as Trump Signals Conditional Talks

Post by : Saif Nasser

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has traveled to Russia at a time when tensions with the United States remain high. His visit comes as U.S. President Donald Trump has said that Iran can “call” if it wants to negotiate, but only if certain conditions are met. This situation shows that while both sides are talking about diplomacy, they are still far from reaching any agreement.

The conflict between Iran and the United States has continued for weeks and has created serious concerns around the world. It began after military actions earlier this year, which led to rising tensions and fear of a larger war in the Middle East. The region is very important for global oil supply, so any instability quickly affects the international market and increases worries among other countries.

Iran’s move to send its top diplomat to Russia is seen as an effort to gain support from a powerful ally. Russia has often backed Iran in global matters, and this meeting with President Vladimir Putin could help Iran strengthen its position. Before visiting Russia, Araqchi also traveled to countries like Pakistan and Oman. These countries have played the role of intermediaries, passing messages between Iran and the United States in an attempt to reduce tensions.

At the same time, President Trump has made it clear that the United States is open to talks, but only under strict conditions. He has said that Iran must not have nuclear weapons, and this remains a key demand. According to Trump, if Iran is serious about negotiations, it should take the first step and reach out directly. His message appears simple, but it reflects a long-standing issue that has caused many past talks to fail.

Attempts to arrange direct discussions have not been successful so far. There were plans for talks in Pakistan, but these were canceled when the United States decided not to send its officials. This has made the situation more uncertain, as both sides seem unwilling to fully commit to dialogue at this stage.

The main challenge remains the difference in what each side wants. The United States is focused on limiting Iran’s nuclear program and reducing its influence in the region. Iran, on the other hand, is demanding the removal of economic sanctions and recognition of its rights, including its ability to develop nuclear energy for peaceful use. These positions are difficult to balance, which is why progress has been slow.

Other countries are also closely watching the situation. Global powers like Russia and China have called for peaceful solutions, while regional nations are worried about the impact of ongoing tensions. The involvement of many countries shows that this issue has become a global concern, not just a problem between two nations.

The current situation is marked by mixed signals. On one hand, there are statements about negotiation and peace. On the other hand, actions such as canceling meetings and setting strict conditions suggest that trust is still very low. This makes it hard to predict what will happen next.

As Iran continues its diplomatic efforts and the United States keeps its conditions firm, the path to peace remains uncertain. Any real progress will require both sides to move beyond strong statements and take practical steps toward compromise. Until then, the situation is likely to stay tense, with the risk of further conflict always present.
