Iran is calling for the United Nations to take significant measures against the United States and Israel, holding both nations accountable for military actions aimed at Iranian nuclear sites in June. This appeal follows recent hints of renewed dialogue from both Washington and Tehran.
In a communication to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the Security Council, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi demanded accountability for what he described as “acts of aggression” against Iran. He urged for reparations, including compensation and restitution for damage caused by these attacks.
Araghchi referenced former US President Donald Trump’s acknowledgment on November 6 of authorizing Israel to strike Iranian nuclear facilities as evidence of direct US involvement. He stated, “President Trump and other US officials bear criminal responsibility for the attacks on June 13,” insisting the UN act according to international laws.
Reports from Iran indicate that the June strikes led to over 900 casualties, including high-ranking military personnel. Tehran asserts that the events were a direct military action planned by the United States rather than mere assistance to Israel and demands justice for the affected individuals.
In spite of these tensions, both the US and Iran have shown interest in diplomatic discussions. Trump indicated last month that the US was willing to negotiate “when Tehran is ready,” highlighting a “hand of friendship and cooperation.” A representative from Araghchi’s office also emphasized Iran’s intention to pursue a peaceful nuclear agreement with the US.
Nevertheless, tensions persist, as Iran insists on the UN addressing what it labels an “unlawful act of war” by the US and Israel. This situation highlights the ongoing instability in the region, even as diplomatic efforts are cautiously advanced.
