The Office of the Fire Marshal in Ontario is probing a tragic trailer fire that occurred in Fort William First Nation. Remarkably, this marks the fourth such incident reported in the Thunder Bay area over the past week.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews were dispatched to Squaw Bay Road shortly after 3 a.m. on Saturday. Upon arrival, they discovered the trailer, situated away from neighboring residences, fully engulfed in flames. Four fire trucks and the platoon chief responded promptly to the emergency.
The initial response team acted swiftly to manage the blaze. Unfortunately, their efforts were in vain as two individuals were found deceased inside the trailer.
Officers from the Anishinabek Police Service were also on-site, collaborating with Ontario Provincial Police and fire investigators to ascertain the cause of the fire. So far, officials have not confirmed the origin of the blaze.
Fire authorities have reminded residents that operational smoke detectors are a legal requirement and have advised increased vigilance when utilizing candles or open flames indoors.
According to the National Indigenous Fire Safety Council, Indigenous individuals face a fire-related mortality rate more than five times that of non-Indigenous populations. For First Nations communities residing on reserves, this figure increases to over tenfold.
“We extend our condolences to the entire community during this challenging time,” stated officials. Assistance from crisis support services is accessible for those affected by this heartbreaking incident.
