Delhi's Red Fort Car Explosion: Anti-Terror Law Investigation Unfolds

Post by : Raina Nasser

Delhi, India – In response to a devastating car explosion near the iconic Red Fort, Indian authorities are ramping up their investigation under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), the nation’s foremost anti-terrorism legislation. The blast, which occurred on Monday at around 6:52 pm, claimed the lives of at least eight individuals and injured 20 more, marking a grim event as the first significant explosion in the capital in over a decade.

Witnesses recounted the harrowing scene as the slow-moving vehicle halted at a traffic signal in the bustling Old Delhi market before erupting, resulting in substantial damage to surrounding structures and cars. As emergency personnel responded, chaos ensued with debris strewn across the area and crowds in panic.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Raja Banthia confirmed the case has been logged under the UAPA and the Explosives Act, along with various other criminal statutes. “We are still in the early stages of the investigation, and commenting further would be inappropriate,” Banthia stated. Forensic teams are currently on-site, meticulously collecting evidence to ascertain the blast's cause and origin.

Authorities are also engaged in efforts to identify the owners and passengers of the vehicle, who are believed to be among the fatalities. Families of the victims have gathered at Lok Nayak hospital to identify the deceased as security measures have been elevated across Delhi and vital facilities nationwide.

Federal Home Minister Amit Shah reassured citizens that “every possible angle” is being investigated, with various security agencies collaborating to expedite the case's resolution.

The Red Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site and emblem of India’s rich history, attracts tourists year-round and serves as the backdrop for the Prime Minister’s annual Independence Day speech. Despite the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi proceeded with his scheduled trip to Bhutan on Tuesday morning.

Authorities are on high alert throughout the capital, stressing the need for vigilance as they continue to investigate this unprecedented and alarming attack in New Delhi.
