Global Handicraft Forum Launches in Sakaka, Saudi Arabia

Post by : Mara Rahim

The International Handicraft Forum has commenced in Sakaka, graced by the presence of Prince Bader bin Abdullah bin Farhan, the Saudi Minister of Culture. This significant event aims to unite artisans from Saudi Arabia and around the world to deepen cultural connections. The forum was officially inaugurated by Prince Miteb bin Mishaal bin Badr bin Saud bin Abdulaziz on behalf of the governor of the Al-Jouf Region, with the Deputy Minister for Research and Cultural Heritage, Maha Al-Senan, also in attendance.

Taking place over two days at the Al-Jouf Cultural Center, the forum is organized by the Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the Heritage Commission and the Royal Institute of Traditional Arts (Wrth). This initiative is aligned with the national Year of Handicrafts 2025, spotlighting the crucial role traditional crafts play in Saudi culture and ensuring their preservation in contemporary life.

The core focus of the forum lies in showcasing how traditional handicrafts embody Saudi Arabia's rich cultural heritage. It seeks to promote artisanship, emphasizing the cultural pride generated by handmade crafts, which forge connections to the community's historical and artistic legacies.

One of the forum’s primary objectives is to strengthen collaboration among Saudi artisans and their international peers. The event fosters a collaborative space for artisans, researchers, and specialists to meet, exchange knowledge, and gain insights. Such cooperation enriches the craft sector and promotes cultural exchange.

Additionally, the forum addresses the vital role of traditional crafts in bolstering cultural tourism within Saudi Arabia. Handicrafts attract curious visitors eager to explore local culture, thereby contributing to the national economy. By empowering artisans, the event aims to generate economic prospects, improving the financial standing of craftsmen and craftswomen.

Besides focusing on heritage, the forum also delves into modern innovations and ideas in the crafting industry. Researchers present their latest findings, while artisans acquire skills to blend traditional techniques with new methodologies. This dual approach ensures the preservation of age-old skills while fostering creative evolution.
