Dozens Hurt in Explosion at Jakarta Mosque During Friday Prayers

Post by : Raina Nasser

Jakarta – On Friday, a mosque within a high school complex in Jakarta, Indonesia, was the site of an explosion that injured numerous individuals. The incident took place around 12:15 local time (05:15 GMT) in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, during Friday prayers, leaving the local community in disbelief.

According to Jakarta city police chief Asep Edi Suheri, 54 individuals were taken to hospitals with injuries that spanned from minor to serious, including burns. Three people suffered severe injuries, while 17 individuals were treated for minor wounds. Other victims received emergency care at the location before being discharged.

The Jakarta Metropolitan Police have swiftly commenced an investigation, sending a bomb disposal team to the high school complex. Security forces have cordoned off the area, with military personnel stationed at the entrance. Initial reports indicated two objects resembling firearms were found at the scene. Evidence suggests one looked like a submachine gun while the other resembled a pistol, both bearing markings tied to extremist references similar to the 2019 Christchurch mosque attack.

However, a government minister later clarified during a site visit that these objects were toy guns, emphasizing the necessity of withholding judgment regarding terrorism connections until thorough investigations are conducted. Additionally, a dark green belt that seemingly held gun cartridges was discovered at the scene.

A preliminary account from a student suggested a possible homemade bomb was brought to the mosque by an individual who had previously experienced bullying; this has yet to be verified by officials.

In light of the incident, Indonesia, which has the world's largest Muslim population, is bolstering security measures at public religious sites. Police are diligently examining the explosion’s details, including the source of the explosive and any possible motives behind it.

Authorities have called for public composure as security forces continue with comprehensive searches and evaluations to ensure the safety of students and worshippers alike.
