India Greenlights 17 New Electronics Component Plants Under ECMS

In a pivotal step forward for the nation's electronics manufacturing goals, the Indian government announced on Monday the approval of 17 new initiatives under the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS). This decision raises the total number of sanctioned projects to 24, representing a strong move towards establishing a competitive and self-sufficient component ecosystem.

The newly sanctioned projects encompass three facilities focused on camera module production, nine for multilayer printed circuit boards (PCB), two dedicated to optical transceivers, and other essential components crucial for mobile phones and electronic gadgets. Collectively, these ventures are projected to secure an investment of ₹7,172 crore, generating production worth ₹65,111 crore over the upcoming years.

Manufacturing sites will be operational across nine states and Union Territories, including Goa, Jammu & Kashmir, and Madhya Pradesh, broadening the regional distribution of India’s growing component ecosystem. Officials indicated that the initiative intentionally concentrates on essential components to support the long-term growth of the country’s electronics sector, rather than diluting incentives.

Prominent companies gaining approval include local players such as Aequs Consumer Products, Jabil Circuit India, Zetwerk subsidiaries Zetfab India and Zetchem Supply Chain Services, Uno Minda, and Syrma SGS' Syrma Mobility. Many of these enterprises are anticipated to establish cutting-edge facilities, including India’s inaugural optical transceiver manufacturing unit and its first 40-layer PCB plant, as well as a quartz crystal production factory—all vital for next-generation electronics.

The Indian government has emphasized the necessity for enhanced domestic design, improved product quality, and stronger supply chains for raw materials. The ECMS initiative aligns with this vision, aiming to mitigate reliance on imports and establish India as a trustworthy partner in global manufacturing.

As the electronics industry surges forward, these recent projects represent a decisive acceleration in India’s pursuit of becoming a key player in component manufacturing, laying the groundwork for a range of products from smartphones to sophisticated digital devices.
