India Names Squad for New Zealand ODIs: Shreyas Iyer Returns with Fitness Watch, Hardik Pandya Still Out

Post by : Saif Nasser

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced India’s squad for the upcoming three-match One Day International series against New Zealand, bringing a mix of relief, caution, and debate among fans. The biggest talking points are the return of Shreyas Iyer, the inclusion of Rishabh Pant, and the continued absence of Hardik Pandya.

Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer have both been named in the squad after missing the previous ODI series due to injuries. Gill has been declared fully fit and is ready to play without restrictions. Iyer’s case, however, is slightly different. While he has been selected, his participation will depend on clearing final fitness tests at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence. This means Iyer may miss the opening match if he does not receive full medical clearance in time.

Rishabh Pant’s inclusion is another major development. The left-handed wicketkeeper-batter had been under close watch in recent days, with questions raised about his form and place in the team. By selecting him as a second wicketkeeping option, the selectors have shown confidence in his recovery and match readiness. His presence adds depth to the batting lineup and provides flexibility behind the stumps.

Hardik Pandya’s absence has again drawn attention, but the BCCI has made its reasons clear. The all-rounder has not yet been cleared to bowl a full quota of 10 overs in an ODI. With the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup coming up, the team management has chosen to manage his workload carefully rather than risk a long-term injury. Jasprit Bumrah is also missing from the series for similar workload management reasons.

Senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli continue to remain central to India’s ODI plans. Their experience and consistency make them key figures as India prepare for a strong New Zealand side. Despite scoring a century against South Africa earlier, Ruturaj Gaikwad has not been retained in the squad, highlighting the tough competition for places.

The pace bowling unit will be led by Mohammed Siraj, who returns to spearhead the attack. He will be supported by Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, and Prasidh Krishna, offering a good mix of swing, pace, and bounce. In the spin department, Kuldeep Yadav stands as the only specialist spinner, while Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar provide all-round options that strengthen both bowling and batting.

Overall, the squad reflects a balance between performance, fitness, and future planning. While some selections may raise questions, the focus clearly remains on keeping key players healthy and building a strong unit ahead of major international tournaments.
