India is on the verge of securing a pivotal $2.8 billion agreement for uranium supply aimed at bolstering its nuclear power generation. This significant deal emerges following the initiation of discussions on a broad economic partnership between India and Canada.
The announcement was made subsequent to a discussion between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during the G20 Leaders' Summit held in Johannesburg. Both leaders reiterated their resolve to enhance civil nuclear partnerships, particularly regarding long-term uranium supply agreements.
Cameco Inc., a Saskatchewan-based Canadian firm, will be the key supplier of uranium. This company has a rich history of providing uranium to India after the expiration of the previous agreement with India’s Department of Atomic Energy in 2020, which was established following Modi's visit to Canada in 2015 to meet then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
The export of Canadian uranium for power generation is permitted under the Canada-India Nuclear Cooperation Agreement that has been active since 2013.
This prospective uranium agreement may span up to a decade and could incorporate a wider framework for nuclear collaboration. India is also exploring the potential of small modular reactors, showcasing flexibility in future nuclear cooperation initiatives.
Moreover, the uranium supply arrangement is in sync with the Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation (ACITI) Partnership. This trilateral effort, announced during the G20 summit, seeks to enhance collaboration amongst these democratic nations in emerging technologies, foster clean energy solutions, and advance the application of artificial intelligence.
The deepening ties between India and Canada signify a robust partnership in nuclear energy and technology, crucial for addressing India’s escalating energy demands and achieving its clean energy objectives. This deal is anticipated to provide India with a reliable uranium supply that is essential for the ongoing operation and expansion of its nuclear facilities.
