Surge in US Flight Delays as Government Shutdown Persists

Post by : Raina Nasser

As the U.S. government shutdown continues into its 40th day, air travel is facing significant disruptions, leaving many passengers stranded and airports overwhelmed. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has cautioned that if the standoff persists, air traffic could dwindle to a mere trickle, exacerbating delays right before the Thanksgiving holiday.

Flight tracking data indicates that over 2,900 flights were canceled and about 8,600 experienced delays across the country. Newark, New Jersey, has reported extensive delays, averaging more than two hours.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has initiated air travel capacity cuts at 40 of the busiest airports, with reductions of 6% reported this past weekend and expected to rise to 10% by next weekend. While international flights remain mostly unaffected, staffing shortages may prompt some airlines to cancel these routes.

Fatigue among air traffic controllers, who are unpaid during the shutdown, has led to increased absenteeism, compelling the FAA to introduce these capacity reductions. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth proposed using military air traffic controllers as an alternative, but Duffy declined, citing the lack of civilian certification.

This unprecedented shutdown has caused widespread distress, affecting hundreds of thousands of federal employees who remain unpaid and disrupting vital services like food assistance programs. Lawmakers are locked in a blame game, with Democrats advocating for health insurance subsidies and Republicans pushing for funding without additional demands.

In a potential shift, President Donald Trump has suggested directing funds to individuals for health insurance rather than to insurance companies, complicating negotiations further. Meanwhile, Senate Republicans are striving to forge a compromise, with a legislative vote anticipated soon.

As the shutdown lingers, travelers are left in a state of uncertainty, and experts warn that air travel disruptions could escalate unless a swift resolution is achieved.
