Following France's recent win against Australia in the Autumn series, rugby coach Fabien Galthie candidly assessed the team's current performance. Although they triumphed with a score of 48-33, he acknowledged that there remains significant work to be done to reach the high level of play exhibited during their last World Cup cycle.
The match, part of the Autumn international rugby series, showcased France's strength but also revealed vulnerabilities, particularly in the first half, where they accrued numerous penalties. At halftime, the score was evenly matched at 19-19, highlighting difficulties in discipline and defense. Galthie stressed that addressing these weaknesses is crucial for the team's growth.
Galthie reflected on the disparity between the current squad and that of the 2023 World Cup, during which France emerged as strong contenders with 24 wins in 26 matches. This year's performance has been less consistent, including a challenging loss to South Africa (32-17), and while they have victories against Fiji and Australia, the nature of those wins left much to be desired.
The absence of captain Antoine Dupont due to a long-term injury has further complicated matters for the team, hindering their stability and coherence. Galthie pointed out that allowing 12 tries in just three matches alongside numerous penalties within their 22-meter zone during the Australian game signals significant areas for improvement.
Nevertheless, Galthie remains hopeful, noting the vibrant competition within the squad and the potential of newer players. Notably, center Nicolas Depoortere has impressed with four tries in the last two tests, indicating a promising future for the team.
Looking ahead, France is gearing up for a pivotal face-off against Ireland in the upcoming Six Nations tournament starting in February. Galthie and the squad are dedicated to enhancing their discipline, defense, and overall consistency to compete effectively at the highest levels again.
In conclusion, though France's win over Australia is encouraging, Coach Galthie recognizes the extensive journey ahead to restore the team to its peak competitiveness. The focus will be on refining their deficiencies and assembling a robust squad for the forthcoming rugby season.
