Sriram Raghavan’s eagerly awaited war narrative, Ikkis, inspired by the valiant life of Param Vir Chakra recipient Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, has undergone a significant alteration in its release timeline. Initially set for a December 25 premiere, the film will now debut on January 1, 2026.
Produced by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films, Ikkis represents Agastya Nanda’s prominent role in this military drama and features the legendary Dharmendra, who is anticipated to make his final on-screen appearance. The release was postponed due to the sustained box office success of Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar, which continues to draw in large crowds and achieve unprecedented numbers nationwide.
Producer Dinesh Vijan clarified that the decision to delay was a tactical one, aimed at providing Ikkis an opportunity to resonate with its audience. Given Dhurandhar's remarkable box office performance, which includes the strongest second weekend ever for a Hindi film, the team determined it best to sidestep direct competition during an already bustling festive season.
Moreover, Vijan emphasized that a January release provides Ikkis a fair opportunity for visibility, mirroring successful past strategies that have benefitted films like Hindi Medium and Pushpa. Less competition often translates to enhanced audience interaction and extended theatrical runs.
The original December slot was also crowded with notable releases, including Kartik Aaryan and Ananya Panday’s Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri for Christmas and the global release of James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, further intensifying the competitive landscape for Ikkis.
Expressing his optimism about the new release date, Vijan remarked that audiences tend to embrace significant storytelling at the beginning of the year, making January a more opportune time for the film's engagement. He concluded that recognizing the right moment is essential for success.
Ikkis narrates the remarkable bravery of Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, who sacrificed his life at a young age of 21 during the Battle of Basantar in the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Along with Jaideep Ahlawat in a crucial role, the film is now poised to grace theaters on January 1, 2026.
