The 2026 UK New Year Honours list highlights the accomplishments of over 1,157 remarkable individuals from various sectors including politics, sports, the arts, and community services. These recognitions encompass everything from Members and Officers of the Order of the British Empire to esteemed knighthoods and damehoods, celebrating significant contributions across the country.

Among the notable honorees is renowned actor Idris Elba, awarded a knighthood for his relentless campaigning against knife crime among youth. His dedication to enhancing community safety has garnered widespread respect, exemplifying the societal focus of this honours list.

Iconic ice dancers Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, celebrated for their flawless Bolero performance at the 1984 Winter Olympics, also received high accolades. Torvill was granted damehood while Dean received knighthood, marking their lasting influence on British sporting culture.

Sarina Wiegman, the Dutch manager who guided the England women's national soccer team to consecutive European Championship victories, was honoured as an honorary dame. This recognition underscores her pivotal role in advancing women's soccer in the UK. Several prominent Lionesses players were also acknowledged for their impactful contributions.

The entertainment sector witnessed significant honours. Cynthia Erivo, a multi-award-winning actress known for her lead role in the 2024 musical film Wicked, received an Order of the British Empire. Warwick Davis, famed for his performances in Star Wars and Harry Potter and founder of Little People UK charity, was similarly awarded an OBE.

Distinguished actor and author Meera Syal, known for cherished TV series and literary works such as Goodness Gracious Me and Anita and Me, was also bestowed the title of dame in recognition of her cultural contributions.

In the corporate world, Simon Roberts, CEO of supermarket giant Sainsbury’s, and John Pettigrew, former CEO of National Grid, received Commanders of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for their outstanding leadership and service.

The New Year Honours, a long-standing tradition since 1890, aim to honor not just well-known individuals but also quiet champions devoted to improving their communities. The ceremonies to present these awards will occur throughout 2026 at royal locations including Buckingham Palace.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer commended the honourees, remarking that the list “celebrates the very best of Britain – individuals who prioritize the common good to strengthen communities and transform lives.”
