Idris Elba Champions African Narratives at Global Media Summit

Post by : Mina Rahman

During a recent international media summit, Idris Elba drew on his extensive three-decade career as a British actor of African heritage, highlighting how essential creators are in crafting global narratives.

Elba, who described himself as “a bridge between cultures,” articulated the significance of storytelling and the responsibility of artists in linking African stories to global audiences. Leveraging his work as an actor, DJ, filmmaker, and philanthropist, he advocated for innovative avenues to connect the global media landscape through genuine and varied narratives.

Acknowledged as the “Son of Africa,” Elba called attention to the need for African youth voices to be elevated. He stated, “We find ourselves at a crucial juncture in media and information. Let’s seize this moment to innovate, connect, and exchange ideas”, while also warning about the dangers of misinformation.

He emphasized the necessity for creators to retain ownership of their intellectual property and receive adequate compensation, noting that numerous African nations are still without the necessary policies to safeguard their creative talent.

Additionally, Elba elaborated on the mission of the Elba Hope Foundation, which he co-founded with his wife Sabrina, focusing on issues like gender equality, youth empowerment, and food security, aimed at equipping young individuals with the tools to implement impactful projects.

Elba stressed the importance of narrative sovereignty, urging that the authentic telling of Africa’s stories must be entrusted to African creators. He also addressed technology's ethical use, especially AI, asserting, “It isn’t a threat—it’s a tool. Genuine intelligence emerges from critical analysis and trusting our instincts.”
