Tragic Loss: IAF Pilot Namansh Syal Killed in Tejas Crash at Dubai Air Show

Post by : Raina Nasser

Wing Commander Namansh Syal of the Indian Air Force has died following the crash of his Tejas fighter jet during an aerial display at the Dubai Air Show on Friday. The incident occurred close to Al Maktoum International Airport, where the air show was being conducted.

Final Moments with Officials

In a pre-crash video, Wing Commander Syal is seen conversing with high-ranking Indian officials, including:

  • The Minister of State for Defence

  • India’s Ambassador to the UAE, Deepak Mittal

  • Additional Secretary (Gulf), Aseem R Mahajan

At 34 years old, Syal hailed from Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh. He leaves behind a wife—who also serves in the Indian Air Force—a six-year-old daughter, and his parents. His family described him as humble and dedicated, with a promotion anticipated soon.

Details of the Incident

The crash involving the Tejas aircraft occurred at approximately 2:10 pm local time during a flying demonstration. The single-seat Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, reportedly lost control during a negative-G manoeuvre at low altitude.

Footage captured during the air show shows the jet's abrupt descent prior to the crash.

IAF Initiates Investigation

The Indian Air Force expressed profound sorrow over the loss and announced the initiation of a court of inquiry to investigate the cause of this tragic event, reaffirming its support for the pilot’s family during this challenging time.

Second Incident Involving Tejas Aircraft

This represents the second crash of a Tejas aircraft in a span of less than two years. The first incident occurred in March of the previous year in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer, where the pilot successfully ejected from the aircraft.

The Tejas serves as India’s homegrown light combat aircraft, designed for superior agility and performance, and frequently showcases its abilities at international air shows.
