Hospitals across Hyderabad have recorded an unusual increase in severe kidney impairment affecting young, previously healthy adults. Many recently admitted patients are in their 20s and 30s, lack chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension, and developed sudden renal failure over the past few months.
Surge in unexplained cases
Clinicians note a notable uptick in admissions for kidney problems, with several centres reporting case loads as much as 30 percent higher than typical levels. Affected individuals present with symptoms such as swelling of the limbs or face, profound fatigue, nausea and vomiting, poor appetite, and alterations in urine colour and volume.
Dr. Ramesh, a nephrologist at a Hyderabad hospital, said, “It is concerning to see young patients without traditional risk profiles arriving with advanced renal dysfunction. Tests confirm impaired kidney function, but the underlying cause is not yet identified.”
City health authorities have begun aggregating clinical reports to map the distribution of cases and identify any common links.
Possible causes under review
Investigations are ongoing to determine the drivers of this phenomenon. Public health experts are examining environmental contamination of drinking water, exposure to industrial chemicals, and excessive intake of protein or other dietary supplements among fitness-focused individuals.
Several industrial zones near Hyderabad have a history of effluent discharge, raising concerns about long-term exposure to heavy metals such as lead and mercury, which can gradually damage renal tissue.
Medical teams are also considering non-environmental contributors: routine misuse of over-the-counter painkillers and inadequate hydration during intense exercise can increase stress on the kidneys and may exacerbate underlying vulnerability.
Authorities report that water samples from affected localities are being tested. Officials advise residents to avoid untreated groundwater, maintain adequate hydration, and seek medical assessment if symptoms appear.
Experts recommend early screening
Healthcare professionals urge the public to heed early warning signs. Symptoms such as persistent tiredness, swelling, or dark urine warrant prompt evaluation. Early detection allows for treatment that can prevent progression.
Dr. Ramesh added, “Timely diagnosis can often permit medical management that preserves kidney function. Delayed presentation, however, increases the likelihood of requiring dialysis or transplantation.”
Investigations by clinicians and public health teams in Hyderabad continue as they work to identify the cause. Meanwhile, authorities stress that awareness, testing and preventative measures remain essential to limit further cases.
