A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded early Monday when a bus carrying over 40 Indian pilgrims, primarily from Hyderabad, crashed into a diesel tanker near Mufrihat, Saudi Arabia. The vehicle caught fire post-collision, severely hindering escape chances for the passengers. Graphic footage shared online depicts the bus engulfed in flames, reflecting the incident's severity.
Asaduddin Owaisi, the AIMIM chief and MP from Hyderabad, reported that 42 pilgrims from his constituency were involved, with initial indications suggesting that only one person survived. Owaisi is maintaining communication with Abu Mathen George, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Riyadh, coordinating efforts with travel agencies to ascertain the victims' details. He urged the Indian government to facilitate the repatriation of the deceased and ensure adequate medical support for the injured.
Chief Minister of Telangana, Revanth Reddy, expressed his shock regarding the disaster and has directed state officials to work closely with the embassy in Saudi Arabia. The Ministry of External Affairs, under S. Jaishankar, also conveyed their condolences. In a post on X, Jaishankar remarked, “Our Embassy in Riyadh and Consulate in Jeddah are extending full support to affected Indian nationals and families. Heartfelt condolences to those grieving the loss, and best wishes for the quick recovery of the injured.”
The Indian Consulate in Jeddah labeled the incident as “tragic” and has initiated a 24/7 control center to assist victims' families. Official helpline numbers have been distributed for the support of relatives, while authorities strive to confirm both the deceased's identities and those who survived.
This shocking event has resonated deeply in India, particularly within the Hyderabad community, as many pilgrims were returning after completing their Umrah rituals in Mecca. Preliminary reports indicate that among the casualties were 11 women and 10 children. Ongoing rescue missions have been launched, with the Indian Embassy working closely with local officials to assist the injured and support the families of the victims.
This accident highlights the risks faced by pilgrims traveling within the region and underscores the necessity for enhanced road safety and careful travel planning. There has been an outpouring of grief on social media, as government officials actively address the crisis.
With inquiries in progress, both India and Saudi Arabia are collaborating to uncover the collision's cause while ensuring that victims' families receive timely information and help. This tragic bus fire stands as one of the deadliest incidents involving Indian pilgrims in years, igniting urgent calls for improved safety measures along pilgrimage routes.
