In a significant move, US President Donald Trump has provided Hungary with a one-year exemption from sanctions related to Russian oil and gas, offering Prime Minister Viktor Orban much-needed relief amid economic challenges.
During Orban’s recent visit to the White House, Trump acknowledged Hungary’s specific difficulties as a landlocked nation reliant on Russian energy. “It’s extremely challenging for him to source oil and gas from alternative regions,” Trump remarked, outlining the reasoning for the temporary waiver.
This exemption follows the US's recent blacklisting of two of Russia’s leading oil firms intended to limit global trade with Moscow. However, Hungary will now be able to continue its energy imports without incurring US penalties for the upcoming year.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó confirmed on social media that Budapest has secured “a full and unlimited exemption,” although US officials stated that this arrangement is confined to one year. Additionally, the agreement comprises Hungary purchasing hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of US natural gas to diminish its reliance on Russian supplies.
Orban, a long-time ally of Trump, has used Hungary’s dependence on Russian pipelines as a pivotal strategy in local politics, assuring voters that access to “affordable Russian energy” will remain available ahead of the next elections. He has consistently maintained that these pipelines are a practical necessity rather than a political statement, given Hungary's lack of direct port access.
The two leaders also engaged in conversations regarding the ongoing Ukraine conflict. Trump commended Orban for his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, pointing out that the Hungarian leader “understands Putin very well” and suggesting his potential role in mediating peace. Orban, in turn, emphasized that only Hungary and the US are genuinely interested in resolving the situation, arguing that many other governments seem more interested in dragging the conflict out.
European nations are likely to scrutinize this development closely, as various EU countries have criticized Hungary’s conciliatory approach toward Moscow throughout the Ukraine crisis. Trump’s action highlights the impact of personal political connections on international relations and Hungary’s effective negotiation for temporary relief amidst wider Western sanctions.
