In a recent interview, actor Huma Qureshi reflected on her early days in Bollywood, revealing her parents' initial shock upon receiving her first film offer. They expressed concerns that it might be tied to a “prostitution racket.”
‘They were skeptical about my chance,’ Huma recalls
Huma recounted how her parents reacted with skepticism when she shared the news of being approached for a movie. “My parents were in disbelief. They questioned, why would anyone consider casting you? It shocked them; they believed it sounded like a prostitution racket,” she shared.
She emphasized that persuading them to allow her to chase her acting ambitions was a significant challenge. “When I think back now, I realize they had no faith in my judgment. It took quite some effort to convince them, especially since they aren't familiar with this industry. Even now, I think they still don’t fully grasp how it operates,” she added.
A film that never came to fruition
Despite their caution, Huma decided to seize the opportunity. She met the filmmakers, reviewed the script, and went through a screen test. Unfortunately, the project did not move forward. “The film was never made, and it left me feeling disheartened,” she admitted.
From Gangs of Wasseypur to Stardom
Prior to her Bollywood debut, Huma featured in several short films and commercials. Her breakthrough came with Anurag Kashyap’s renowned film Gangs of Wasseypur: Part 2 (2012), which brought her widespread acclaim.
Diverse Roles and Recent Ventures
Throughout her career, Huma has taken on a wide array of roles spanning various genres — from Ek Thi Daayan to Badlapur and Jolly LLB 2. Despite some films like Dedh Ishqiya and D-Day not performing well at the box office, Huma has consistently impressed audiences with her performances.
Recently, she reprised her iconic role as the astute politician Rani Bharti in Maharani Season 4. Additionally, she featured as a police officer in Bayan, showcased at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), and appeared in Jolly LLB 3. Looking ahead, Huma is set to play the antagonist in the upcoming Netflix series Delhi Crime 3.
