Oxford-Trained Gynaecologist Explains Why the HPV Vaccine Saves Lives — And Why Men Must Take It Too

Post by : Saif Nasser

An important health message is gaining attention after Dr Tanaya Narendra, known online as Dr Cuterus, shared a detailed post about the HPV vaccine. Dr Tanaya is an Oxford-trained gynaecologist and embryologist who often speaks about sexual and reproductive health in simple language so people can understand and take action. Her latest message focuses on the vaccine that can prevent cancers caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV.

According to Dr Tanaya, cancers caused by HPV are among the few types that can be prevented with a vaccine. Despite this, HPV-related cancer is still the second most common cancer among Indian women, and many lives are lost every year because people are unaware of the vaccine or unsure about which one to choose. She emphasises that both men and women should take this vaccine because HPV does not affect only women. The virus can cause cervical cancer in women, but in men it can lead to cancer in the penis, anus and even the mouth. This makes the vaccine equally important for both genders.

Dr Tanaya explains that the HPV vaccine builds protection in the body against a group of viruses that spread easily through skin-to-skin contact. These viruses can stay hidden in the body for years before they cause serious disease. Taking the vaccine at the right age helps the immune system fight the virus before it becomes harmful. She says that anyone between the ages of 9 and 45 can get vaccinated, and the earlier it is taken, the stronger the protection.

On the question of which vaccine people should choose, Dr Tanaya gives clear guidance. She recommends Cervavac for those between 9 and 26 years of age. Cervavac is made in India and costs around ₹2,000 per dose, making it more affordable for most families. She also mentions Gardasil 4 and Gardasil 9, which come from the United States and are more expensive. Gardasil 4 is priced around ₹4,500 per dose, while Gardasil 9 can cost up to ₹10,000. People between 9 and 46 years can choose any of the three vaccines depending on availability and budget.

She also explains how many doses are needed. Children below the age of 15 require two doses, while older people must take three doses for full protection. This schedule ensures that the body develops strong immunity that lasts for years.

Dr Tanaya stresses that men must not ignore the HPV vaccine. Many men think the vaccine is only for women because they do not face the risk of cervical cancer. But HPV can affect their own health as well. She highlights that HPV infections in men can lead to cancers that are often diagnosed late, making treatment difficult. Taking the vaccine not only protects men but also reduces the spread of HPV within the community.

Her message is simple: everyone, regardless of gender or sexual activity, should get vaccinated. HPV spreads easily and silently, and many people carry the virus without knowing it. By taking the vaccine early, young boys and girls can grow into healthier adults with a much lower risk of developing certain cancers.

Dr Tanaya’s post is a reminder that awareness can save lives. She encourages parents, schools, and health workers to talk openly about the HPV vaccine so that more families feel confident about it. With clear information and timely action, India can reduce the number of cancer cases linked to HPV in the coming years.
